Ever wondered what it’s like to float weightlessly without a care in the world? We do! We kicked off the third season of The SASS at LA’s Pause Float Studio, where Sharzad Kiadeh and Susan Yara dipped their toes (and the rest of their bodies) into float tanks.
Also known as sensory deprivation tanks, these pools are filled with body-temperature water with a mix of Epsom and Dead Sea salts, which allow guests to effortlessly float in an anti-gravity environment. Although the concept sounds pretty futuristic, float therapy was actually conceived in the mid-1950s by John C. Lilly, who founded the National Institute of Mental Health Lab in the Virgin Islands, according to Pause. It was originally developed to treat post-traumatic stress disorder and addictions, and now float tank therapy has finally hit the mainstream.
So why is float therapy good for your body and soul? For starters, each float pod contains about 1100 pounds (yup!) of salt, aka magnesium sulfate, which helps us detox and relieve inflamed joints. (Magnesium is also great for your tummy troubles!) And as our expectant hosts discovered (did you catch Susan’s announcement?), floating also helps alleviate the aches and pains of pregnancy.
