This Superfood-Topped Yogurt Swap Is Packed With Beauty Benefits

Yogurt is packed with nutrients (like calcium and vitamins B-2 and B-12, to name a few) and probiotics, which are "good bacteria" that occur naturally in the digestive system. According to WebMD, healthy bacteria is known to regulate the digestive tract and boost the immune system — but if you're lactose-intolerant, yogurt may not exactly be good for your gut. In a recent Mixed Makeup Wellness episode, holistic nutritionist Kelly Leveque shares a healthy yogurt alternative that's suitable for dairy-free diets. Enter kefir (pronounced "keh-FEAR" or most commonly "KEE-fir"), a fermented cow's milk drink that's packed with probiotics.

On top of offering a host of health benefits, this easy blueberry coconut kefir comes with beauty perks, too. In addition to strengthening the immune system, reducing the risk of heart disease, and helping with weight loss, the fatty acids in coconut milk keep skin naturally moisturized and can help treat wrinkles and aging skin.

Then there are the blueberry toppings, which contain antioxidants that protect skin from harmful free radicals — a.k.a. the stuff that makes our skin sag by breaking down collagen. Plus, they promote collagen production and can help reduce the risk of skin cancer.

Below, check out the full recipe and watch the video to learn how to make it yourself at home.

Blueberry Coconut Kefir Recipe

4 cups full fat coconut milk 1 packet kefir starter 2 mason jars for storage

Mix the coconut milk and kefir starter. Cover and let sit overnight. To assemble, add a couple of spoonfuls of frozen blueberries to the bottom of the mason jar. Then, sieve the kefir into the jar to remove any lumps. Top with a few spoonfuls of frozen blueberries.
