The Best Hair Mask for Your Hair Type

The Best Hair Mask for Your Hair Type

Let’s be real, we constantly put our hair through hell—color, heat, styling, teasing, and more. I'm guilty of all of them and my hair has paid the price. That’s why it's important to give your hair a little TLC from time to time with a hair masks.

First things first, it’s important to know hair masks won’t completely fix your damaged hair or un-split your ends. Instead, hair masks are like a Band-Aid for your hair problems. And with all the hair masks out there, how do you know which one is the right one for you? Here's a breakdown:

  • If you have colored hair, go for a deep moisturizing mask. Because the ends of our hair dry out easily, you want to concentrate the mask there. If you don’t have a mask for colored hair, a dry hair mask does the trick too.
  • If you have fine hair, proceed with caution. Because fine hair is easily weighed down, too much hydration can do more harm than good. Focus the mask from the mid to the ends and don’t leave the mask on for more than three minutes.
  • If you have frizzy or dry hair, keratin-based masks are your best friend. Make sure you leave it on for at least 10 minutes.
  • If you have curly hair, you want a mask that’s intensely moisturizing—think avocado, coconut, or argan oil. These help make curls more manageable.
  • If you have oily hair, go for a clay mask. The nourishing properties in clay keep your hair voluminous and shiny without weighing it down even more.

Since I have dyed hair, I'm a fan of ultra moisturizing masks. But recently, I’ve noticed my dyed hair looks dryer than usual, so I decided to try out Rene Furterer Karinga Ultimate Hydrating Mask ($35). I apply it to my hair once a week and let it soak in for about 10 minutes before I rinse it out. I'm happy to report this mask has brought my hair back to life and it feels much healthier.
