A Step-by-Step Halloween Makeup Tutorial to Transform You Into a Snapchat Filter

A Step-by-Step Halloween Makeup Tutorial to Transform You Into a Snapchat Filter

New York Fashion Week didn't just bring us fresh nail art ideas and flashback hair inspo — it also got us thinking about Halloween costumes. After seeing Desigual's genius social media-inspired makeup, we decided to take the idea and run with it: here, we bring you a step-by-step tutorial on how to get the ethereal Snapchat filter beauty look for the upcoming spooky holiday.

We asked pro makeup artist Nikki la Rose to show us exactly how to get the dreamy filter IRL, just in time for our Halloween costume planning. "The key to this look is to make the skin look super contoured and flawless," she tells us, adding that making the eyes look bigger is also essential to pulling it off.

See the full Halloween makeup tutorial with photos (starring Mixed Makeup's own producer Anna Fryxell!) below, plus a handy list of everything you'll need, including the products that Rose used.

Step 1: Prep + Contour

Start by prepping the skin: after cleansing and applying your favorite primer, apply your base foundation all over, including the eyelids.

Next, highlight under the eye, bridge of the nose, chin, forehead, and brow bone and blend with a Beauty blender. Then "bake" or set the areas you highlighted with translucent powder.

Next, contour under the cheekbones, forehead, sides of the nose, jawline, crease of the eye with cream for a more dramatic affect. Blend with beauty blender and set with powder.

Then, apply an illuminator or highlighter, like Hourglass Cosmetics Ambient Lighting Palette (which was specifically made to give a filtered look), then sweep to all the places you highlighted plus the cupid's bow.

Finally, focus blush on areas you contour — but avoid the apples because the filter doesn't look like that. For Anna's fair skintone, we used MAC Cosmetics Mineralize Blush in Warm Soul. Then, fill brows in with tinted brow gel.

Step 2: Eyes + Lips

Onto the eyes! For eyeshadow, Lorac Cosmetics Pro Palette was used to create an ethereal effect.

First, apply your desired eyeshadow primer. Then, blend Light Pink into the crease, followed by Mauve over the lid and Taupe on the outer corner of the crease. Next, mix White and Nude and apply to the inner corner of the eye and under the brow bone.

Next, lips! While you let the mascara dry, use a neutral nude liner and gloss to create a soft and shiny lip. Here, we used Make Up For Ever Aqua Lip Liner in 1C Nude Beige, then topped it with Jouer Long-Wear Liquid Lip Creme Liquid Lipstick in Papaye and Napoleon Perdis Luminous Lip Veil in Rare Opal (a clear shimmer gloss).

To create glimmering eyelids, first apply glue adhesive or lash glue with your finger tip. Then, pat Make Up For Ever Glitter N3 on top with finger.

Then, apply a shimmery champagne liner (we used Nude Stix in Burnish) on the bottom lash line to brighten the eyes and make them look larger.

Finally, apply white or nude eyeliner to the waterline on bottom and apply mascara to bottom lash line to finish the eyes and really make them pop.

Step 3: Add the Butterflies!

To create the butterflies, we used orange, yellow, and light yellow cardstock, which you can buy for less than $1 apiece at most arts and crafts supply chain stores.

Next, fold the cardstock in half and draw half of a butterfly wing along the fold. This will be your cutting guide. Then, proceed to cut out your butterfly!

Cut out more butterflies on the other pieces of cardstock, varying the butterfly sizes to your desire.

Then, place a bobby pin on the center of each butterfly, then attach all around the head where desired. Voila, you're a Snapchat filter!
