6 Black-Owned Skincare Companies to Support Right Now

6 Black-Owned Skincare Companies to Support Right Now

After all the petitions are signed and you’ve volunteered, donated, marched, or all of the above, you might wonder if you can do more to support the Black community. The first tip is to remember this is a movement that should continue beyond this week, so start thinking of long-term ways to help out. The second tip is to look at ways to support in your everyday decisions, like when you make purchases. While it might not feel like it can make a big impact, remember every bit helps. There are several Black-owned businesses to lift even higher, so we put together a list of some of our favorite Black-owned skincare companies that should be on your radar if they aren’t already.

Founder: Jamika Martin

Jamika Martin founded Rosen Skincare for those with acne-prone skin after her own lifelong struggle with acne. “I've dealt with acne most of my life and I've always done whatever it took to clear up my skin,” says Martin. “But then there was a point when I knew I needed a better way to treat my skin. A way that wasn't filled with questionable ingredients, medications and repetitive formulas (salicylic acid face wash anyone?). I was over the acne care industry, it's lack of innovation and how they always seemed to make me feel worse about my skin.”

Their website has a quiz to help you find the right products for your needs and their best-sellers include Earth Cleanser ($18), Bright Citrus Serum ($18), and the Rose Water Face Dew ($18).

Founder: Kristen Noel Crawley

Founder Kristen Noel Crawley was inspired to create KNC Beauty after spotting a wall of lip masks in Tokyo. Two years later, her own version of these lip masks (collagen-infused!) hit the market and quickly became popular.

Some products to try include Kiss My Lips All-Natural Collagen Infused Lip Mask ($25 for a five-pack), SupaBalm ($22 — mint or OG rose flavor), and there’s also the All Eyes on Me! All-Natural Retinol-Infused Eye Mask ($25 for a five-pack).

Founders: Tiffany Mozen Wofford & Issey Kobori

Co-founded in 2017 by Tiffany Mouzon Wofford and Issey Kobori in Brooklyn, NY, Golde is a brand “centered in making superfood-boosted essentials for health and beauty.” They have superfood latte blends, but as far as skincare goes they have a Clean Greens Face Mask ($34) made with mango juice powder, marshmallow root extract, spirulina powder, and chlorella powder as well as a Lucuma Bright Face Mask ($34) made with lucuma fruit powder, papaya fruit extract, sea buckthorn juice powder, and marshmallow root extract.

Founder: Nyakio Kamoche Grieco

Founded by Nyakio Kamoche Grieco, a first-generation American of Kenyan descent, learned about beauty from her grandmother in Kenya. She was a coffee farmer who taught Grieco to exfoliate her skin using crushed coffee beans on her skin with a piece sugarcane. She took this beauty knowledge from her grandmother to start her eponymous skincare brand that’s available at Target.

Some product standouts include the Sweet Almond Cleansing Oil Balm ($26) and the Baobab Youth-Infused Daily Defense Crème ($36).

Founder: Karen Young

Founded in 2015 by Karen Young, OUI The People is a direct-to-consumer shaving essentials brand. “I started OUI because I thought womxn were being left out of the conversation around shaving and I knew we could design a better experience…for us, by us, if you will,” says Young on the brand’s Instagram. “So far I’ve flown to a tiny town in Germany to find the best razor manufacturer, traveled to France to track down the most thoughtful natural fragrances, and lifted every rock stateside to work with the best chemists.”

They product line-up includes a rose gold and matte gold Sensitive Skin Razor ($75), Sugarcoat Shave Gel-to-Milk ($64), a DEEP V Bikini Line Sheet Mask ($8 each), and so much more.

Founder: Dorian Renaud

Dorian Renaud founded Buttah Skincare after experiencing the glowing skin benefits shea butter while on a modeling gig. That eventually led to Renaud to discovering that vitamin C serum combined with a gentle cleanser and shea butter helped with concerns like acne and dark spots. This skincare line combines ingredients from “natural sources with hi-tech formulations that work together to give amazing results.”

The Buttah Complete Skin Kit ($60) includes the aforementioned trio of vitamin C, cleanser, and facial shea butter.
