Black-Girl Approved Sunscreens from Supergoop, Lancer, & more

Black-Girl Approved Sunscreens from Supergoop, Lancer, & more

I spent longer than I’d like to admit believing that I didn’t need sunscreen because I had dark skin. While the melanin in our skin does give us some sun protection, it’s not enough to protect from sun damage. And darker skin tones are more prone to hyperpigmentation and sun exposure can worsen existing hyperpigmentation. If you want to even out your skin tone, all your efforts will go to waste if you don’t wear sunscreen daily.

There’s just one problem: many sunscreens are just not formulated with dark skin tones in mind, so they end up looking ashy and leave a white cast on the skin. Luckily, there are more and more sunscreen innovations on the market that blend seamlessly on darker complexions. It’s 2020 which means nobody should have to wear sunscreen that makes them look like a ghost. Here are four of my favorite sunscreens that don’t leave a white cast on dark skin tones. No more excuses!

Lancer Sun Shield SPF 50

Lancer sheer fluid Sun Shield spf 30 ($60)

Some things are worth splurging on, and this Lancer sunscreen is one of them. It’s super lightweight, and even after applying multiple layers throughout the day and over makeup, it doesn’t feel greasy or heavy. It doubles as a makeup primer and is a great base for my complexion products. Plus, it’s packed with amazing ingredients like, anthocyanin-rich grape stem cells which work to leave the skin soft and smooth.

Supergoop Unseen Sunscreen

Supergoop Unseen Sunscreen SPF 40 ($34)

The Supergoop Unseen Sunscreen is an SPF unicorn – it has everything you’d want from sunscreen and more. I tried a sample of it and instantly added the full size version to my cart. It’s packed with antioxidants, it’s oil-free, and it leaves my skin with a velvety-matte finish. It has a silky primer texture and works amazing under makeup without being cakey or feeling thick. The only downside is it’s not waterproof.

Neutrogena Hydroboost Water Gel Sunscreen SPF 50 ($10)

I love the water-gel texture of this sunscreen, it feels cool and soothing on my skin and is perfect for hot summer days. The formula has hyaluronic acid and leaves me with plump, dewy and hydrated skin. It sinks quickly into the skin, spreads easily, and plays well with both liquid and powder foundations. It's also light enough that it doesn’t trigger my very acne-prone skin, and the coolness feels amazing on my angry breakouts. I love the fresh, floral scent, but you should do a patch test if your skin is sensitive to fragrance.

cestmoitintedmoisturizinglotion

C’EST MOI TINTED MOISTURIZING LOTION SPF 30 ($16)

On days when I want a little extra coverage, but don’t want to wear makeup, I reach for this C’est Moi Tinted SPF. It’s packed with antioxidants that instantly hydrate, balance, correct, and protect your skin. The formula is a bit thicker than I’d like, but with some work it seamlessly blends into my skin. In the winter, when I’m a bit paler, it gives me a hint of color and a healthy glow.
